Jungle Green

You might have seen this craft project floating around the DIY blogs lately--I know I did. I suggest you give it a go. I think this project would be the perfect art piece for a kid's room or nursery.  I put mine in the bathroom (same thing really).  This project is cheap, quick, and lots of fun. My cat loved it too!

First things first.  You'll need to buy a canvas. I bought mine from Jo-Ann Fabrics.  Jo-Ann's claims that  they're always 40% off.  This canvas measures 12x18 (I think) and was about $8.

You'll also need some crayons.  I always have crayons on hand. ALWAYS. You never know when you're going to need to hot glue them to a canvas and melt them with a hairdryer, so it's just good housekeeping to always have some Crayolas in stock. I had the special edition 120 box...yeah I know you're jealous.

Next you'll grab your hot glue gun and your hair dryer. I just picked this purple hairdryer at Costco. It's lovely.  I recommend using a mid-low temp hot glue gun (but keep in mind that this is coming from someone who sustained 3rd degree burns gluing earrings [read: pony beads] onto my unicorn stuffed animal with a leaking super hot glue gun).

Next you glue the crayons in the order you want (labels out please).

Now you'll take your hair dryer and turn it on HOT.  When you hover it right over the crayons, they melt and drip in all kinds of interesting patterns. The tutorial I followed failed to mention crayon splatter. Splatter happens, so you'll need to lay down some kind of paper before you do this part. You also want to prop the canvas up so that the wax can drip down.  The little bit of splatter did add an interesting texture to my canvas. I also think that it depends on the hair dryer you're using whether or not you get lots of splatter.

Make sure your kittens (sidekicks) are at a safe distance from the DIYing.

Now all you need to do is hang your art up in your kid's room (or your bathroom...you should probably just hang it in your bathroom).

Good luck and happy crayon melting!

  3. Thanks ladies! I love how easy it is to customize each piece. I originally was going to do one with only grays and blues and then put one orange crayon in there. I decided not to because I would have to buy quite a few boxes of crayons to collect enough of one color.
Good luck with your crayon canvas!

  6. I have to start commenting on these and say I do NOT like using hot glue to attach the crayons to the canvas. I find, Elmer's glue original white, does a great job, but take a little longer to solidify, but has a great strong hold once dry. Hot glue will only melt the crayon when doing this without the wrapper on the crayon.
