insta-sista

Much of my life in the past couple weeks has consisted of watching Matilda sit in sunny windows. I think,
like me, Matilda has noticed the change in the weather and is trying to soak up as much of the late
summer sun as felinely possible. Valiant effort, girly. Keep up the good work...

new old curtains

I found this vintage fabric at an estate sale for 25 cents. I was attracted by the pattern and the bold primary colors, all in spite of the icky polyester-ness. Unlike my grandmothers, who (Mom has informed me) were pretty excited by the introduction of the first polyester fabrics--What do you mean, it doesn't wrinkle?--I had no plans to put this near my skin.

But curtains, well that's a different story. Unfortunately, my lack of sewing skills stood in the way of new curtains. Stood in the way of them big time. But lucky for me, Mom had stopped by for a visit and seemed game to break out her mother's vintage sewing machine, which I own and can sort of use...if you don't count that ongoing battle between myself and the bobbin. As for that, we are total jerks to each other. So, I put Mom to work and went to take a nap. True story...

My weekend in Spokane.

Busted out the watercolors.

Started painting the solar system.

Added glitter and glow-in-the-dark paint...obvi!

We painted wooden beads and made necklaces.

Matilda slept in her special box and played with her sparkle balls.

Christine has lots of plants in one window (weirdo).

That includes this venus flytrap that we fed 2 bugs to.

It was a wonderful weekend.

Sometimes after a horrible day, you just have to play with a kitty and hope everything turns out in the end.

Winter walk

This morning Maya and I went for a walk in Riverside State Park, right down to the Spokane River.
It was quite nice, though a little chilly.

That's Deena

And after the walk...I bought a Christmas tree!
Yep, a Christmas tree is now in my possession.

I. Am. So. Excited.

Matilda was not excited. She hid behind this chair for 20 minutes, but she's fine now.

Where, oh, where...

has the day gone? Oh yes, I remember. It's gone into watching season three of Parks and Recreation and cuddling with Matilda on our new favorite knitted blanket. So, maybe I've been totally slacking today. Maybe I haven't really done much of anything. So what? It's been an awesome day of sitting on my bed and eating linguine with mushrooms and goat cheese, looking at magazines, forcing Matilda to bat at the drawstring from a hoodie, and messing around with craft projects. I didn't run any errands. I didn't even get the mail. It was perfect.

I did make this headband.

And here's a little bit of Parks & Rec for you to enjoy.

What a lovely lazy day.

25 cent treasures

I've been meaning to have a roundup of recent estate sale treasures, but honestly, sifting through everything can be so overwhelming. So, I decided to focus on some of the 25 cent vintage finds I've picked up recently. I never cease to be amazed at all the strange and wonderful little things people accumulate throughout their lives. I'm including myself in that people category because I'm busy as can be accumulating bits of other's accumulation. Um...accumulations?

Look at that floof!

This froggy has a dubious expression.

Diary lock and key

Salt spoon?

By golly, it's a compass.

A mallard pencil sharpener!

Yup, treasures abound if you're willing to do a little digging.

keeping it clean

It's another warm day in Spokane, so I decided to hide indoors and tackle a couple cleaning/organizing projects. While I'm not big on sitting in the sun, there are a few things in my apt that do appreciate a little direct sunlight.

Matilda slept beneath this curtain most of the afternoon.

While Matilda napped in the sun, I cleaned out my closet and dresser, found some stuff for the thrift store, some for consignment, and a couple things I'd totally forgotten about.

Like these shoes:

I love coming across things I'd forgotten.

kitty cousins

Hey, did you notice our new badge? It's courtesy of The Itty Bitty Kitty Committee. We're fans of the IBKC: big time.

Point number one: The headmistress of the IBKC blog, Laurie Cinotto, is a Tacoma resident and a super-talented crafter. To check out her craft blog, Laurie Cinotto: art and craft, mosey on over here.

Catherine's kitty, Genevieve, loves all kittens
(except for the one she lives with...Peanut).

Point number two: KITTENS! Yup, sweet babies: every day in every way. Laurie and her husband, Craig, foster orphaned kittens for the Tacoma/Pierce County Humane Society. The kittens (sometimes in singles, more often in families) stay with Laurie until they're old enough for adoption. So many success stories! It just makes us giddy beyond belief.

Penelope, aka Peanut, wants to be Genevieve's BFF.

Point number three: Dedication. Laurie gives bunches and bunches of her time at home (kittens are hard work!), keeps the blog updated, and participates in the Humane Society's annual fundraiser, which is in progress right now (hint, hint!). We really admire her selfless, good-hearted nature...and her kitten wrangling skills. Oh, she has skills like you wouldn't believe.

Mom's kitty, Bruno, loves kittens, too.

If you'd like to add an Itty Bitty Kitty Committee badge to you blog, follow this link. You'll be pleased to know there are several to choose from.

If you're intrigued by all this talk of kittens and would like to donate to this year's fundraiser-- over $40,000 has been raised in the past couple weeks through the IBKC alone! So awesome!--you can go here for details.

Matilda definitely loves kittens (because she was once a kitten mom)!

Also, you should know that a new batch of kittens has just arrived at Laurie and Craig's. Eeeeek! Now would be a great time to check in on them.
