A couple weekends ago, Mom and I did a little estate sale browsing in Puyallup. We came away with six or seven amazing Mexican paper lanterns (I should really take a picture of them--they're quite pretty) and these vintage sterling silver bangles, also from Mexico. And silly me, I almost walked right by them. They were all in a jumble together inside a basket. Good thing that I had Mom with me because she started looking through them and brought about my Wait just a minute! moment. Oftentimes Mom finds the treasures because she's the one with the patience to look in unlikely places. Good job, Mom....

Handmade Home: Charmed I'm Sure
Catherine was just in town visiting me, and we did a lot of stuff, and when I say a lot I mean so much moving around that my calves are killing me still. I felt like they were going to buckle on me at work. Oh sister visit fun.
One thing that we did (and talked about) a lot during her stay was making beaded charm bracelets, and I have to say it went real well...

Best of stacking rings

There was a time when I wore absolutely no jewelry because I felt incredibly self-conscious about any kind of adornment. Yup, much of my teenage to semi-adult life was dedicated to not being seen. Then for a time it was all chunky cocktail rings and dangly statement earrings for me. Like after all that not being seen I needed to be doubly seen. But the pendulum is swinging the other way again, and I haven't worn my cocktail rings or dangles to the office. It's little post earrings and simple brass rings for me. Which is why I love all these slender, simple stacking rings. Honestly, what an elegant, no-fuss way to dress up a naked hand...

DIY: Tiny felted earrings
I've been thinking for a while that I should needle-felt some earrings--this week I decided to go for it. Turns out, it's a super-simple project, even if you've never needle-felted a day in your life...

WANT: Datter Industries

tiny golden hand necklace |
OK, I'm just going to say it: whenever I don't have money to spend on handmade trinkets and unique adornments, I want them even more. Get a clue, brain. You'd rather have soy milk and grapenuts over letterpressed posters and digitally printed silk scarves, right? Priorities! So, I've decided that until I'm able to make these lovely items my own, I'm going to quietly covet and visit them online and profess my admiration for them here, there, and everywhere. Today I have an object crush on the delicate jewelry by artist Kaye Blegvad of Datter Industries. Everything she creates seems to exude a magical quality, almost as if each item were a little spell...

DIY: Arrow Rack
I found a bunch of old arrows while messing around in Dad's shop a couple months back and have been going back and forth about what to do with them. I finally committed to turning them into a rack for necklaces. If you've visited us before, you may remember my tree branch necklace holder. Apparently, I'm big on necklace display. Not surprisingly, this project requires a few arrows, and unlike me, you might not just stumble across arrows as part of your everyday activities. So, here are several ideas on where to procure arrows of your very own...

DIY: Trash into Treasure
I finished my little ombré trash necklace this week. Wait. What? Yes, I said trash. Here's the scoop: I'm calling it a trash necklace because the ombré bits are actually made from trash. OK, that might not require the extensive explanation I had planned. Still, when I say trash, I'm not talking about trash I dug out of the dump pile exactly (though that'd be pretty excellent, too)...this is actually something I'd previously tossed without a thought. And then one fateful day, I started wondering if maybe I could find a use for this particular bit of refuse. Turns out, I could. Without further ado, I give you the secret of the ombré trash necklace...

let's get mystical

Chrysoprase pet rock necklace |
It's true. Pet rock necklaces have the power to change you in ways you wouldn't believe...especially when they're
imbued with the mystical properties of various rocks and minerals. Who is the behind these bundles of happiness, confidence, and prosperity, you ask? Why Ms. Darbie Nowatka of Field Guide Design.
I purchased the above Chrysoprase necklace as a graduation gift for Catherine. Not only does it encourage prosperity and success, but it also "protects against negative energies and facilitates happiness." You can see it right there on the card that comes with the necklace. Believe me, Catherine needs all the protection against negative energies she can get. No offense, sister, but you're constantly inundated with that stuff. I hope you're wearing this necklace like every single day.
But if you're not surrounded by Negative Nellies, there are definitely other pet rock options.

Little Bear Giclee Print |
I'd like you to meet Devon Smith, the artist behind the darling Deerface. (Psst...I added the darling because she is!) This is a brief sampling of her illustrative work. Pretty pretty, right? I love how all the girls look either really petulant or really suspicious. And isn't petulant an excellent word? Petulant. Pet-u-lant. Sorry. This is how I amuse myself.

grizzly bear brooch |
Look at these cutie pie badges by illustrator Elizabeth Pawle! Which do you love the most? The shifty-eyed grizzly? The startled badger family, all in a row? The snoozy kitty, wrapped up tight? Or the tiny-legged inquisitive corgi? I can't single out just one because they're all so precious. Well, if I were forced to choose, I think it would be the grizzly because something's going on there. He has a secret for sure, and he thinks you're onto him. Why can't you see his paws and claws? Because he's hiding them...a precursor to attack, I bet. Dangerous badges are the best badges--that's badges, not badgers. You don't need to specify that badgers are dangerous. I mean, that goes without saying. Same applies to bears.

Take a gander at these stunners by Yumi of and O Design. Yumi, a Japanese ceramicist working from Melbourne, makes brooches, necklaces, earrings, and dear little porcelain dishes. I wish it were autumn right now, because I'd love to pin one of these beauts to my jacket, wouldn't you?

Cat lockets!?!?
Yeah, you heard me--CAT LOCKETS! What's better than wearing a cat locket with a picture of your cat inside the locket? Answer, nothing.
Cats not your style? What about a really sleek fox necklace? (You should probably work on liking cats more too.)

branching out
Do you remember my cemetery branch from like four months ago? Well, today I finally decided its destiny.
That knob on the end looks like a fetal giraffe head. Or is it just me?
For my base, I picked up a pine clock face from Michael's. I think it was $4.00-5.00. A bit more than I would usually spend, but I was pretty set on having a pre-drilled hole, mostly because I don't own a drill.
But I do own lots of pocket knives of varying sizes and blades, so my plan was to enlarge the hole via knife. My dad, who was an incredible woodworker, would be mortified, I'm sure. Also, I realize that sitting cross-legged on your bed and reaming a soft wood with a pocket knife isn't incredibly smart, but I made it through without any bloody incidents. Hopefully, you can do the same.
It took about 20 minutes for me to enlarge the hole enough to fit the base of my branch. If you have a drill, it will take you like 3 seconds and will be the safer route. Lucky you. Do not look at my fingernails. I forbid it.
After I gouged with my pocket knife a bit, I smoothed things out with rough-grained sandpaper wrapped around my index finger. There is, I'm sure, a tool for this as well, but not having said tool (whatever it may be), I found using my finger to be adequate. I do have a couple rough spots on my finger and thumb from the sandpaper though. Ugh, lame.
I didn't make the hole too big because I wanted a snug fit for my branch's base. Once I had the hole finished, I secured the branch and the plaque with my trusty hot glue gun. I also glued a little rope loop to the plaque, so the whole shebang can be mounted on the wall. No pictures of that because for some reason I think it's safe to take pictures when a knife is in use but not when I'm dealing with heated glue. Go figure.
So, the branch and base are one. After everything dried, I picked away the excess hot glue and decided I'd go with white for the base. Two coats did the job without completely obscuring the woodgrain.
In the tradition of me revealing my piles of crap to you, here is the dresser-top mess I'm attempting to corral. It's seriously ridiculous. You can judge. I deserve to be judged on this one. Oh man, there's that bunch of keys I still need to incorporate into a project. Next time...maybe.
So, I mounted my branch above the offending dresser and began unloading necklaces like nobody's business.
I don't have a picture of the dresser-top end result because that's still a work in progress. But I did remove everything, clean it all, and organize it into groups. Buttons, bar soap, ribbons, perfume, friendship rings and bracelets, half-finished necklace projects, watches in need of batteries, bits of rope, small stuffed animals, random coins, and so on. Sigh. I've still got a long way to go, but this much, at least, has been accomplished!
If a branch isn't what you had in mind for displaying jewelry, how about an arrow rack?

noble neon
I realize neon is a big thing again. Whatever. I'm thrilled because now I can find neon stuff, like wallets and whatnot, everywhere. And maybe in two months, I won't be so thrilled. But for now, I'm soaking it up. Well, not literally.
Actually, strike that. Reverse it.
Since neon is a noble gas (and on the periodic table of elements!!!), it is present in the air in trace amounts, which means that all of us are sort of soaking up neon. OH, SCIENCE SLAM! But in truth, neon's allure has nothing to do with the fact that it's an element. For me, neon is all about these fannypacks Monika and I had as kids. Yes. You read that right. Monika's pack was hot pink and white and mine was neon green and black. Oh yeah, we were some badass pre-teens with those babies slung around our hips. I think I took mine to Disneyland with my Girl Scout troop. And Monika's, being white, turned all gray and grimy after like two weeks. Regardless and nonetheless, I have been going over some very fond memories of those fannypacks recently. Yup, my nostalgia is rooted in alllllllllllllll neon.
The inspiration for this project (other than my pining for the fannypacks of days gone by) is the neon friendship ring above. Catherine gave this to me, purchased with her staggering ticket winnings from Wonderland in North Spokane. She's a Ticket Beast, believe me. I think she'll appreciate that moniker. Who wouldn't?
Rounding up the usual suspects: a selection of paints, paintbrush, scissors, cotton clothesline, and matches
Wrap the clothesline around your finger to determine ring size or around your wrist if you want to go bracelet.
Leave a tiny bit of wiggle room because you'll lose a bit when you seal the ends together. (With those matches. Yes, there is fire in this tutorial.)
Instead of making paint puddles on my magazine work surface, I used the paint caps. Keep it clean, I say.
I like to hold the clothesline thusly. I definitely do not mind getting paint on my fingers.
Give your clothesline a good coat of paint. Over, under, and all around.
I went for stripes and blocks of color, and I decided leaving the natural cotton rope was also nice.
Let the paint dry. I didn't really time it--a couple hours should be adequate. Once dry, form the rope into a circular shape. The paint will make it stiff, so you might have to bend it a bit to loosen things up.
Now you'll burn both the ends. Eeek! Only adults for this step.
As soon as the end heats up, the synthetic interior of the clothesline will get all melty.
That's your cue to smoosh the two ends together. They'll stick like glue.
Brush off the ashy bits and...Voila! Aww look, it's a brand new ring!
Now, I did wonder about burning the ends of the clothesline, like if there might be a less smokey way to go. But I tried a couple glues and found the results messy, and corralling the wild and wooly ends of the clothesline, as it started to unravel, was pretty difficult with glue alone. The matches are a nice option because they melt all those flyaway bits together and really do form a tight bond. I've been wearing my rings for a week now and haven't had any issues with things coming undone or the soot factor, so I'm sticking with fire. Duh, of course I am. I would, however, like to give them a coat of Modge Podge, so they don't get all soggy when I wash my hands...also so the natural cotton parts don't end up looking like Monika's white fannypack. You know, all gray and sad, yet well-loved. Always well-loved.
But that, my dears, is for another day. Right now, I'm just going to enjoy this neon nostalgia.

P.S. Do not even look at my nail polish. I took these pictures on Monday, and believe me, without any touch-ups, the nail polish situation has only gotten worse. Honestly, I don't know how I think I can get away with wearing half-scrubbed-away nail polish to work. What am I, fourteen? Actually, if we consider the evidence, the neon evidence... Tsk. Tsk. So slovenly.
