For that I am sorry. Want to know what hasn't changed during the last few weeks of blog silence? Bad Peanut. She's still just as bad as ever. When Monika was home at the beginning of March, she decided to hashtag "dailybadpeanut." I'm sure glad she did. Now I have a virtual scrapbook of her badness. This is just some of her badness. She knows how to open doors (cabinets), just like the raptors!!!<br />

This week I am in Myrtle Beach, SC. I'm squeezing some pleasure out of another work trip (squeezing pleasure out, sounds kind of gross… sorry). </div>

Even though we are at a lovely resort off a pretty Atlantic beach, it's of course very chilly and windy. I like to look at this picture and pretend that it's actually 70 degrees and calm.<br />

A Washington-ing we shall go! Last weekend Ben and I headed up to Washington to visit Peanut… among other things...</div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-z_rbf_v3-2o/Uy28zoV-TiI/AAAAAAAAERw/6Qbv-_w2rnI/s1600/IMG_6180.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-z_rbf_v3-2o/Uy28zoV-TiI/AAAAAAAAERw/6Qbv-_w2rnI/s1600/IMG_6180.JPG" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We headed up North to Pt. Townsend to check out the spot one last time before May. I am super enchanted with this place. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_Sf52aXfwKk/Uy280J3VmZI/AAAAAAAAER4/GCS6YLuxFeU/s1600/IMG_6181.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_Sf52aXfwKk/Uy280J3VmZI/AAAAAAAAER4/GCS6YLuxFeU/s1600/IMG_6181.jpg" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Of course we had to make it down to visit with Peanut (and Catherine) in Olympia. Just for the sake of honesty, I did close all the doors in her <a href="http://onmyhonoriwilltry.blogspot.com/2014/02/peanut-purls-and-cat-house-from-up.html" target="_blank">Up</a> cat house and laughed at her through one of the windows. Not sorry.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-fE_kNwy_LGE/Uy28z4P9VEI/AAAAAAAAER0/DHsN4zJaGlE/s1600/IMG_6182.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-fE_kNwy_LGE/Uy28z4P9VEI/AAAAAAAAER0/DHsN4zJaGlE/s1600/IMG_6182.jpg" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
But to be completely fair, Peanut is really bad. Just ask the lavender she knocked down.</div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-exGbAGmYkeA/Uy282nginII/AAAAAAAAESU/gah2w4Z16A0/s1600/IMG_6184.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-exGbAGmYkeA/Uy282nginII/AAAAAAAAESU/gah2w4Z16A0/s1600/IMG_6184.jpg" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I did also go visit some other creatures in Tacoma, like this tree frog. Also, I saw a snake… well the tail end of the snake.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-8x1FjPP6Tlg/Uy282h4kIsI/AAAAAAAAESQ/6MdqVu5qfO4/s1600/IMG_6185.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-8x1FjPP6Tlg/Uy282h4kIsI/AAAAAAAAESQ/6MdqVu5qfO4/s1600/IMG_6185.jpg" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And I trounced around with Mom, Christine and Sully out in the pasture. Christine showed me where all the bones were!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-BuOpg3UacBs/Uy283C_zc0I/AAAAAAAAESY/c3k1-nnGeGo/s1600/IMG_6186.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-BuOpg3UacBs/Uy283C_zc0I/AAAAAAAAESY/c3k1-nnGeGo/s1600/IMG_6186.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Thanks for a mega fun visit Washington!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I've been spending quite a bit of time exploring my neighborhood and downtown Olympia lately. I have my set jogging route, and rarely do I venture from three(ish) tried and true paths. I like the friendly little mileposts that I've come to enjoy along they way. I tend to think of it as "nice graffiti."</div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I don't know who the artist is or even if it's the same person, but I do know that I kind of like the positive little messages this stranger has left for all of Olympia to see.</div>

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We'll just go ahead and pretend that they spelled "beautiful" correctly. It'll be our little secret. I'll take some misspelled friendly graffiti over the usual any day...</div>

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I had to walk past this gem by my work twice a day for a week before it was painted over. Oh Olympia.</div>

<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-aKQ0F0GkAUo/Ux66k6U9QMI/AAAAAAAAERI/FrkF_tkSVhY/s1600/dsf.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-aKQ0F0GkAUo/Ux66k6U9QMI/AAAAAAAAERI/FrkF_tkSVhY/s1600/dsf.jpg" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The weather just turned here in, recently not so sunny California, and I am taking advantage to the full effect. How you may ask? Well to start off with I'm sitting inside and enjoying my light drenched living room and indoor foliage.<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-bpP8kGJLG2s/Ux66kkcaCXI/AAAAAAAAERE/yqcGfQRCiks/s1600/ficus.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-bpP8kGJLG2s/Ux66kkcaCXI/AAAAAAAAERE/yqcGfQRCiks/s1600/ficus.jpg" height="422" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I recently got this beautiful plant and potted it. I'm so excited to bring some more greenery inside, every time I look at it I feel a little bit of serenity wash over me. I do have to say that my biggest upset with getting a new plant is what to pot it in. I find that ceramic pots are too expensive, and typically not the most aesthetically pleasing. I lucked out and found the above pot at Home Depot for $12 and some change. All I had to do was give it a quick glitz with some gold spray paint and voila, a pot that I seriously enjoy.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-45IMHdYQFqA/Ux66k2sdifI/AAAAAAAAERM/bjIi8jYym3E/s1600/invites.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-45IMHdYQFqA/Ux66k2sdifI/AAAAAAAAERM/bjIi8jYym3E/s1600/invites.jpg" height="466" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Another thing I did, while I was not outside taking advantage of the weather, was finish up wedding invitations. Every invite, insert, rsvp, and envelope had a water color brush to it. Since it's going to be a small party it wasn't too large of a task, and I really enjoyed it. Apparently, you give me a creative project with a lot of organized repetitive movements and I'm happy.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Hopefully your weather is turning too, so you can find projects to keep you inside, just make sure to open a window.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hl13TP-UYCA/UwpbYUY7l9I/AAAAAAAAEPc/oGUr9zBw5Ds/s1600/IMG_5777.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hl13TP-UYCA/UwpbYUY7l9I/AAAAAAAAEPc/oGUr9zBw5Ds/s1600/IMG_5777.jpg" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I have been spending a lot of time walking with two little (not actually little) dogs, around our little neighborhood. Olive is holding on to our treasures, I am in love with pink jasmine and really want to plant a ton everywhere.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QaZ4mEer_BM/UwpbXC-bpFI/AAAAAAAAEPM/FY-AAaKcjNk/s1600/IMG_5778.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QaZ4mEer_BM/UwpbXC-bpFI/AAAAAAAAEPM/FY-AAaKcjNk/s1600/IMG_5778.jpg" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I have also been walking around outside of my Burbank neighborhood. For instance I drove down to Newport Beach and met up with Ben's sister Sammy. I had to walk much farther then I anticipated because there wasn't a lot of free parking, but at least I found a spot that allowed for me to have a be achy stroll along the boardwalk to get to my final destination.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-W4VdKenGsBA/UwpbXht12wI/AAAAAAAAEPQ/VC5tzFQisPI/s1600/IMG_5779.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-W4VdKenGsBA/UwpbXht12wI/AAAAAAAAEPQ/VC5tzFQisPI/s1600/IMG_5779.jpg" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Destination being Balboa Park (I think there are way too many places named Balboa this or that). This ferris wheel went way to fast to be safe. We did not go on this.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

They're done! The godforsaken socks have been knit!!! All of my Christmas 2013 obligations are fulfilled!!!!!<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
You can read about my the <a href="http://onmyhonoriwilltry.blogspot.com/2013/12/peanut-purls-battlestar-galactica-socks.html" target="_blank">Battlestar Galactica sock details here</a>....and <a href="http://onmyhonoriwilltry.blogspot.com/2013/12/peanut-purls-battlestar-galactitca-sock.html" target="_blank">over here</a> (they've been a work in progress ok?). I picked up this yarn in 2012 from <a href="http://twistedpdx.com/" target="_blank">Twisted yarn store</a> in Portland, Oregon. It's Malabrigo sock yarn. I bought one purple (named Black Currant) and one blue-hued (named Baltic) skein. The blue ball (ha) ended up being knit into the Song of the Sea Cowl for my mom for Christmas. Now that I think about this, both of her Christmas knits were made out of <a href="http://www.malabrigoyarn.com/sub_yarn.php?id_sub_yarn=16" target="_blank">Malabrigo sock yarn</a>--neato!<br />
I always forget how awkward it is to get a flattering sock picture. I don't think I figured it out in this post.<br />

<br />
Side note: I have only visited Twisted Yarn Store once, but I <a href="http://onmyhonoriwilltry.blogspot.com/2012/11/peanut-purls-winter-knits.html" target="_blank">blogged about it back in 2012</a> because it was such a lovely yarn shop. I bought quite a bit of yarn and have since knit something out of ever last ball--that doesn't always happen. I was pleased with each and every project. Take a look for yourself...an inventory of Twisted Yarn projects.<br />

I knit some mittens with Malabrigo yarn from Twister, but I guess I never blogged about them. I've knit three pairs of these Grove Mittens by Brooklyn Tweed over the last 3 years, and I believe I gave them to my mom. I could never get the sizing right. Mittens are hard to fit on my gigantic hands. Sigh. Here is the pair I knit for Christine (I think I only <i>knit</i> them for her because they didn't fit me when I was done) <i><a href="http://www.ravelry.com/projects/NicolaiC/grove" target="_blank">forget her and forget you too</a></i>.Catherinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11590804258484727117noreply@blogger.com13tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4968730817591692251.post-26032341383362078912014-03-04T08:30:00.000-08:002014-03-04T08:30:00.053-08:00Ahoy, La Jolla!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

So I am lucky enough to work for company with a location in La Jolla California, where they want to host training. Luckier still, that the hotel that they typically put everyone up at is booked and I get to stay at the <a href="http://www.thegrandecolonial.com/" target="_blank">Grand Colonial</a>. What a lucky girl I am, I ended up with a room with a view.</div>

For several years now, I've been using black and white postcards as bookmarks. Once I finish a book--and by finish, I mean immediately after I read the last sentence--I find a pen and write the title of the book and the author on the postcard. It's like a running scrapbook of my literary life.</div>

We got a little bit of snow (about 4 inches) a few weekends back. It seemed like the perfect day to spend some time with Black Beauty (and Ginger too....and obviously Genevieve even though she's not a horse).</div>

Peanut is always going to be good/bad. She's mostly bad; bad and smart and loving and all that other cat stuff too. Well, in the middle of the night she decided to knock off my jar of oatmeal from the counter. I didn't have oatmeal for breakfast that day.<br />

There's no doubt that leather is a classic, and it's not surprising that we've seen a large number of leather projects over the past year. Leather can be incorporated into any design from ultra modern to vintage-inspired and when cared for, leather will only get better with age. Here are a few of my favorite modern leather projects...</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This DIY leash by <i><a href="http://www.dismountcreative.com/" target="_blank">Dismount Creative</a></i> impresses me to no end. It looks so incredibly well-finished! I feel like my DIYs, no matter how much I've refined the process, still always look like DIYs. But this leash is sharp enough to shell out some serious USDs. If I had a dog, I'd make the heck out of it. </div>

But Clemence of <i><a href="http://www.ohthelovelythings.com/" target="_blank">Oh the Lovely Things</a></i> created this easy and sweet hair tie that might just go the trick!</div>

<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-MFUobvM52Ro/Uu3GZ5iyaLI/AAAAAAAAEMw/5_hqTkjVO3M/s1600/pink+derby.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-MFUobvM52Ro/Uu3GZ5iyaLI/AAAAAAAAEMw/5_hqTkjVO3M/s1600/pink+derby.png" height="426" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I feel like it's always feast or famine with our glassware situation at home. In the past year I have purchased over a dozen glasses that are no longer with us. Luckily I hit the jack pot and found these nice pint glasses that remind us who was boss in 1953.<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-gXSJooDXpvU/Uu3Gavwb-bI/AAAAAAAAEM0/V0OatbsxfW0/s1600/lineup.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-gXSJooDXpvU/Uu3Gavwb-bI/AAAAAAAAEM0/V0OatbsxfW0/s1600/lineup.png" height="426" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Kentucky Derby, US Open Golf Champions, National Basketball Champions, and All Time Greats; I'd definitely say these glasses are all time greats. Just in case you were wondering here are the top five on the All Time Greats glass; Jim Thorpe (athlete), Babe Ruth (baseball), Jim Thorpe (football), Jack Dempsey (fighter), and George Mikan (basketball). Not sure who some of these gentlemen are but I can say that the race horse Man O'War even made it on the cup.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-wv0RB2KeLa8/Uu3GbUwG1-I/AAAAAAAAEM8/d9JJeOouv1o/s1600/sports.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-wv0RB2KeLa8/Uu3GbUwG1-I/AAAAAAAAEM8/d9JJeOouv1o/s1600/sports.png" height="426" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I also found some more interesting glasses to have just in case, I figure that if I have back up the likelihood of me breaking a glass would be less. My theory is things only happen at the most inconvenient times, so if I always have back ups then it'll never be inconvenient, and I'll never break a glass. It would actually be a convenience to break on then I'd have more room in the cupboard. Wow, apparently I've really thought about this.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com10tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4968730817591692251.post-74944282948603819512014-02-26T08:00:00.000-08:002014-02-26T08:00:01.282-08:00Peanut & Purls and a cat house from UP<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I've been planning on making Peanut her very own UP house for a while now. On a Monday night, the urge became too strong. Four days later, and this is what I have. It's a monster of a cat house (quite large), but I love it! </div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Most everyone has seen UP, and if you haven't, stop reading this, get on Netflix, and fix that right away! There's something about the UP house that just makes me really happy. If only there were a way to add some balloons to her house. I might have to think about that one...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I've blogged about my <a href="http://onmyhonoriwilltry.blogspot.com/2013/11/made-found-cardboard-cat-houses.html" target="_blank">love of cardboard cat houses</a> before. Peanut loves her other cat houses. I've made her a little <a href="http://onmyhonoriwilltry.blogspot.com/2012/08/cat-cottage.html" target="_blank">cat cottage</a> and a farm house. The brilliant thing about cardboard cat houses is that they're practically free. I used paint, a glue gun, tape, and cardboard boxes--all things I already had around the house. All the detail is made with cardboard. Go ahead, take a closer look.</div>

<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ummt6IxeO-0/Uux1Cq0Vr3I/AAAAAAAAMNo/T4AnnCJpmOw/s1600/amahl_exterior+%23.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ummt6IxeO-0/Uux1Cq0Vr3I/AAAAAAAAMNo/T4AnnCJpmOw/s1600/amahl_exterior+%23.jpg" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
No one diagrams the dissolution of a relationship like Lorrie Moore, and "Amahl and the Night Visitors: A Guide to the Tenor of Love" is no exception. (My, what a clunky title. You can see why I shortened it above.) <i><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Self-Help-Lorrie-Moore/dp/0307277291/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1391229063&sr=1-3&keywords=lorrie+moore" target="_blank">Self Help</a></i>, the collection in which "Amahl" appears, is devoted to tales of love and loss. When listing authors I admire, I somehow always forget about Moore. This is terrible of me because she's really quite wonderful. With an eagle-eye for details that ring devastatingly true and wit for days, Moore seems able to capture the right word, feeling, and movement at the exact right moment. Oh, she's a sharp one....<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Plus, Moore devotes the perfect amount of story space to interactions between the main character, Trudy, and her newly acquired cat. Win-win!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<i>At three o'clock in the morning you hear his car in the driveway, the thud of the front door. When he comes into the bedroom, you see his huge height framed for a minute in the doorway, his hair lit bright as curry. When he stoops to take off his shoes, it is as if some small piece of his back has given way, allowing him this one slow bend. He is quiet. When he gets into bed he kisses one of your shoulders, then pulls the covers up to his chin. He knows you're awake. "I'm tired," he announces softly, to ward you off when you roll toward him. Say: "You didn't let the cat out, did you?"</i><br />
<i><br /></i>
<i>He says no, but he probably should have. "You're turning into a cat mom. Cats, Trudy, are the worst sort of surrogates."</i><br />
<i><br /></i>
<i>Tell him you've always wanted to run off and join the surrogates. </i><br />
<br />
<i>Tell him you love him.</i><br />

Because I'm still in the lovey dove spirit, I took a look back at my instagrams and these were some of my favorites…<br />
<a name='more'></a>First off, how can you not love this kid who is smitten with the Dungeons and Dragons books? I recently listed to a pod cast on <a href="http://www.stuffyoushouldknow.com/podcasts/" target="_blank">Stuff You Should Know</a>. <a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Er91TxKV0Xk/Uunh5ccFINI/AAAAAAAAFKo/pIw6Fm5Ox-U/s1600/Man+o+war.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Er91TxKV0Xk/Uunh5ccFINI/AAAAAAAAFKo/pIw6Fm5Ox-U/s1600/Man+o+war.jpg" height="640" width="636" /></a></div>
<br />
This post hurts my heart in the best possible way. My stomach is fluttering and my nose can recall just how all of these toys smelled--that familiar sweet plastic! I know exactly how they would feel if I were able to hold them, and I can remember all the happy memories they were part of. Well, mostly happy memories. Take for instance my <a href="http://www.breyerhorses.com/" target="_blank">Breyer horse</a> Man O War. Christine, Monika, and I were in the backyard playing model horses (naturally). Monika got mad and chucked Man O War across the lawn. He landed, with his back leg sticking out of the lawn like some kind of horse lawn marker. His leg broke off in the dirt. I had to dig it out.<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
Breyer horses were a big deal for the Nicolai sisters, never mind that we had real horses (including a pony), we loved our Breyer horse collections. Another equally prominent toy from our youth was Playmobile. Spending a bit of all of our childhoods in Germany, our parents caught on to the brilliance that was/is Playmobile. Like Breyer horses, I can still spend five minutes as an adult in a toy store gawking at the Playmobile section. I have to overcome the urge to buy something, by reasoning with myself and realizing I am, after all, an adult. We still have all of our Playmobile, and with three of us, we amassed quite the collection.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-d_idr5GxtiA/Uus8mZ2mTYI/AAAAAAAAFK4/8DVcmvTVdis/s1600/3154-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-d_idr5GxtiA/Uus8mZ2mTYI/AAAAAAAAFK4/8DVcmvTVdis/s1600/3154-1.jpg" height="346" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
Another horrible Monika story is that she used to tell me certain Playmobile toys that were mine were actually hers and because I was too young to remember being given my sheep and sheepdog set, I believed her and would politely ask her every time if I could play with <i>her</i> dog. Christine let me in on her tricks when I was about eight. I reclaimed the Playmobile that was rightfully mine.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Madxv2ZhM_w/UunfVfdYy9I/AAAAAAAAFKc/kKojBseKCEM/s1600/Toys+of+my+youth.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Madxv2ZhM_w/UunfVfdYy9I/AAAAAAAAFKc/kKojBseKCEM/s1600/Toys+of+my+youth.jpg" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
If you were a child of the 90s, you no doubt remember Gak, Skip-its, Mouse Trap, and maybe Bouncin' Babies. Not too many people got on the Bouncin' Baby wagon. I got a Skip-It for my 9th birthday. It was a lot of fun until Monika decided to Skit-It in the pool. That's when the counter broke. I wonder if my mom still has my Skip-It...<br />
<br />
I don't know if I saved the best for last but...BARBIES! WE'RE INTO BARBIE!!!!<br />
One of Barbie's best friend's name was Midge. Was that ever a name? Has anyone ever met a "Midge" in their life? The sisters can remember that one Christmas morning when Monika unwrapped her giant (I'm sure it wasn't THAT big) Barbie Western Fun Motor Home.<br />
<br />
I JUST WANT TO PLAY WITH THEM ALL RIGHT NOW. Good thing my mom saved everything, and I totally could make my dreams a reality. Would that be fun or would it be the most depressing thing ever? We'll find out! Also, go ahead and check out one of the Mowry twins in this gem of a commercial from 1990.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/DnEnPJFuHrs" width="420"></iframe></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I came across a "Bath Time Fun Barbie" commercial and that Barbie was overrated. Way to go Matel.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Ok one more. I have Sun Runner, "Western Fun Barbie's" horse. The acting in this commercial is atrocious. And would you wear a tiara while riding a horse? Really? I mean REALLY!?!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/tPhi_cpfK5k" width="420"></iframe></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Sorry Monika--you kind of come off sounding like a jerk in this post. I'm sure that you have equally crappy stories about me, but do you remember them?</div>

<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-91qqFp1q8EE/UuB_mRuZttI/AAAAAAAAMG0/xmCQfj7sprI/s1600/IMG_1085.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-91qqFp1q8EE/UuB_mRuZttI/AAAAAAAAMG0/xmCQfj7sprI/s1600/IMG_1085.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
With all the <a href="http://onmyhonoriwilltry.blogspot.com/2013/10/peanut-purls-and-more-cowls.html" target="_blank">cowl making</a> Catherine has been doing this past year, I finally got motivated to knit one for myself. Take forever, right? I buy nice yarn with every intention of making something, but then I let the skeins sit on my dresser for weeks. Ok, months. Catherine finally gave up asking me if I had started the hat I was supposed to be working on in October. I think because I flipped it and used the hat yarn for my cowl...<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
Because I'm a fan of mostly mindless knitting, I didn't want a pattern that forced me to figure out what a k1p1sskkyo2pyo3 is. (I just made that up, and I hope to God it's not a real stitch.) So, I chose a pattern from <i><a href="http://www.purlbee.com/" target="_blank">The Purl Bee</a></i> that was simple in both form and execution: the <a href="http://www.purlbee.com/the-purl-bee/2013/11/26/lauras-loop-structured-alpaca-cowl-in-purl-sohos-new-alpaca.html" target="_blank">Structured Alpaca Cowl</a>.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/--WAnFkEWup4/Ut8yYhnW0QI/AAAAAAAAMGQ/Gl7du_Ljhjo/s1600/IMG_1029.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/--WAnFkEWup4/Ut8yYhnW0QI/AAAAAAAAMGQ/Gl7du_Ljhjo/s1600/IMG_1029.jpg" height="820" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<i>The Purl Bee</i> pattern is free, and while the <a href="http://www.purlsoho.com/purl/products/item/9307" target="_blank">Alpaca Pure</a> yarn they suggest does look very nice, it's $26.00 a skein. This project requires two entire skeins of Alpaca Pure*, and according to Laura, there were no leftovers. That was a little steep for me, so I went with <a href="http://aslantrends.com/royal_alpaca.php" target="_blank">Aslan Trends' Royal Alpaca</a> in Hunter Green. It's 100% alpaca, super soft, and only $18.50 a skein.<br />
<br />
A slouchy, cozy, and wonderfully soft handmade cowl for less than $20.00? Not too shabby for something that's become part of my official at-home uniform.<br />
<br />
*I modified the pattern slightly because Laura included this bib flap on the front. I think it helps maintain the cowl's structure, but I was dubious about the look of the bib. If you want to make this cowl without the bib, there are instructions on adjusting the pattern in the comments section of that post (which I did not see until after I spent precious brainpower figuring out how to adjust the pattern on my own. Not that I'm bitter.). The good news is that without the bib, I only needed one skein for this project.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Do you remember at the end of December when I blogged about <a href="http://onmyhonoriwilltry.blogspot.com/2014/01/brooklyn-tweed-has-their-new-2014.html" target="_blank">Brooklyn Tweed's Winter Look Book</a>? There was that one resplendent sweater called Alloy. I caved and bought some <a href="http://www.knitpicks.com/" target="_blank">knitpicks </a>yarn. I really wanted to get Brooklyn Tweed yarn (remember Truffle Hunt?), but it would be a $150 sweater, and I want to make sure I love the pattern first.</div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The body of the sweater will be the light grey (Dove Heather) and the accent panels will be the dark grey (Cobblestone Heather). Nice try on the naming Knitpicks--I mean it's fine, but it's definitely not Truffle Hunt. I'm so hung up on the name! The only other sweater I've knit is one from Vogue knitting. I called it the <a href="http://onmyhonoriwilltry.blogspot.com/2011/06/vogue-sweater-endeavor-take-ii.html" target="_blank">wet dolphin sweater </a>because it was a nice shade of grey that reminded me, of course, of a wet dolphin. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm excited to kick this off, but first I <u>have</u> to finish the <a href="http://onmyhonoriwilltry.blogspot.com/2013/12/peanut-purls-battlestar-galactica-socks.html" target="_blank">Battlestar Galactica sock</a> for my mom. There are worse problems to have, and it's good to have goals. Right?</div>

Finding the perfect shoes to wear with an outfit is important, they need to be comfortable for whatever activity you have planned, as well as they must compliment the garment you are wearing. I've noticed that I have a lot of appropriate footwear for February…<br />
<a name='more'></a>These fuchsia flats were purchased second hand off of Christine for $12. I think she got them at Old Navy originally. Later she gave me her other pair that are a nice midnight blue.<br />

These red Enzo Angiolinis have been with me for years, Olive decided to eat my first pair so I had to replace them. Thanks Olive.<br />

Impulse Target purchase. I did love these platform heels with this lovely floral print. Too bad I've never worn them. I really like them in theory.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And because this is a handmade post that has been hijacked with the non handmade, I've included a link to some DIY shoe alteration ideas for you. Some of them are cute, and some are really not, but I'll let you be the judge.</div>

It should come as no surprise to anyone that the books I chose to round out February are not about love, but rather unrequited love. In this instance, a young cowboy named Chet takes a winter job feeding cattle in Glendive, MT. He comes into town one evening and wanders into a night class taught by Beth Travis, just out of law school, who lives 9 hours away in Missoula. Chet falls for her of course, but nothing ever goes as planned, and well, I did say <i>unrequited.</i>..</div>

"Travis, B" is the first story in Maile Meloy's wonderful collection <i><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Both-Ways-Only-Way-Want/dp/1594484651/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1391143884&sr=1-1&keywords=both+ways+is+the+only+way+i+want+it" target="_blank">Both Ways Is the Only Way I Want It.</a></i> There's more heartache in Meloy's stories than happy endings, but they're all well-crafted, beautiful, and real. I think you'd love her, truly. </div>

<i>Outside, he swung her up onto the horse again, and she put her arms around his waist. She seemed to fit to his body like a puzzle piece. He rode slowly back to the school parking lot, not wanting to let her go. Next to the yellow Datsun, he held her hand tight while she climbed down, and then he dismounted, too. She tugged her puffy coat where it had ridden up from sliding off the horse, and they stood looking at each other.</i> --Maile Meloy</div>

<i>Both Ways</i> was one of the <i>New York Times'</i> 10 best books in 2009, but I feel like Maile Meloy isn't really that well known. Her stories are quiet--the emotions at work subterranean and powerful. I recommend giving her a shot. And if you're already a fan of Maile Meloy, you might want to try story collections by <a href="http://onmyhonoriwilltry.blogspot.com/2013/11/book-report-amundsen.html" target="_blank">Alice Munro</a>, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/I-Sailed-Magellan-Stuart-Dybek/dp/0312424116/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1391144309&sr=1-1&keywords=stuart+dybek+I+sailed+with" target="_blank">Stuart Dybek</a>, or <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Burning-Bright-Stories-Ron-Rash/dp/B0044KN0LS/ref=la_B001IQX8XQ_1_7?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1391144252&sr=1-7" target="_blank">Ron Rash.</a></div>

All of my air plants are dying. I'm incredibly upset and a little baffled. I've had most of them for at least three years--<i>three healthy years</i>. The stalks above are from my last remaining survivor, but it's slowly whittling down to its bulb and is maybe 1/5 of its former size. Sigh. I'm so bummed. Why, Tacoma?! Why are you killing all my air plants?!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Maybe as some kind of trade off, Tacoma has been providing some decent sunsets. I'm a sucker for a pinky-purple sky, even if it doesn't have any clouds to feed my #cloudobsession. </div>

I received this card from my dear little friend Zoey. I thought I'd be able to send one final card to her old house before she moved, but it seems my plans were not entirely successful. Zoey's note reads: <i>Dear Christine. Sorry. You're too late. Canyon and I are having fun. From Zoey. </i></div>

<br />
If you are staying in this Valentine's evening I would like to share of my viewing recommendations for the occasion...<br />
The Decoy Bride<br />
<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/rzKabVjQFQQ" width="560"></iframe><br />
<br />
This movie is very light and adorable, how could it not be with <a href="http://www.david-tennant.com/" target="_blank">David Tennant</a> and Kelly MacDonald. I find this a charming and easy watch. I've watched it several times since discovering it on Netflix.<br />
<br />
Romancing the stone<br />
<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/WokoWHHAxp4" width="420"></iframe><br />
<br />
This is one of my top movies of all time. I love Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turners on screen chemistry. If you haven't seen this please for the love of god watch this movie! (and then watch Jewel of the Nile, and the War of the Roses)<br />
<br />
Only You<br />
<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/zLrqyfkXt_A" width="420"></iframe><br />
<br />
I hate to be redundant, but this is also one of my top movies. Marisa Tome and Robert Downey Jr are so amazing together, not to mention it has one of my favorite lines of a romantic fashion (he would kill tigers for you…), which in truth I wouldn't support unless it was a life or death situation. Which I would hope is the only time a gentleman would kill a tiger for a lady, lest he be no gentleman.<br />
<br />
The Office Special- spoiler alert if you haven't seen the original Office series incompletion<br />
<a name='more'></a>I still cry when I watch this, I love it so, so much.<br />
<br />
